Welcome! I am so glad you’re here. My name is Diane Bernstein and I am an International
Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with more than four years of professional
experience assisting mothers and babies with breastfeeding. My greatest passion is
helping new mothers and babies achieve their feeding goals. This is why I founded Drops of
Liquid Gold.

I have extensive experience counseling breastfeeding patients in a variety of settings some
of which include the hospital/inpatient, outpatient and the clinic. My areas of special
interest include breastfeeding aversion and agitation (BAA), infant oral anatomy and
tethered oral tissues (TOT), neurodivergent breastfeeding mothers and prenatal
breastfeeding education. I also hold an ICEA’s Childbirth Educator (ICCE) Workshop
Certificate.

I am Basic Life Support certified (BLS) and I completed my Neonatal Resuscitation Program
training in 2023. In addition to my private practice, I work part-time at my local hospital as
part of their lactation and childbirth education staff. I am a prenatal breastfeeding class
instructor and facilitate their weekly breastfeeding parent support group.

I have a combined 7+ years of personal breastfeeding experience. During this time, I was
able to overcome significant breastfeeding challenges with the invaluable expertise of
multiple IBCLCs. The impact these lactation professionals had on my life and breastfeeding
experience led me to change the direction of my career and become an IBCLC myself.

I am married with two adorable children. What brings me joy other than lactation?
Bonding with my family, enjoying time spent with loved ones, traveling, aurora borealis
chasing, tennis and ice skating.

Prenatal Visit

Why should I see a lactation consultant
before the arrival of my baby?

When a new parent is armed with appropriate
breastfeeding knowledge, studies show that the
mother will have a
greater likelihood of breastfeeding
successfully.

Also, parents will approach feeding their baby with
greater confidence and realistic expectations.

  • early breastfeeding education

    • proper latch techniques

    • breastfeeding positions

    • understanding infant feeding cues

    • how to tell if baby is getting enough breastmilk

  • benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby

  • how your partner can support breastfeeding

  • return to work or school preparation

  • milk expression/pumping breastmilk

  • completing appropriate flange sizing

  • recommended breastfeeding preparation/action items before
    baby’s arrival

  • special medical conditions for mother and how they may impact
    breastfeeding

  • anticipated medical concerns for baby and how this could affect
    breastfeeding

What will a prenatal consultation cover?

Pricing

A one-on-one, private, in-home prenatal
breastfeeding consultation using their
health
insurance is typically covered for the patient.
Without insurance, a prenatal consult is $200.

In addition to receiving education and resources, you
will also receive a customized, tailored infant feeding
plan to help you reach your breastfeeding goals. This
plan can outline strategies for overcoming possible
challenges to ensure a smooth transition into
breastfeeding upon baby’s arrival.

A travel fee will apply for all in-home visits. See our

Will Insurance Cover My Visit?

Oftentimes, yes! Most health insurance plans must now cover the cost of multiple visits with a
board certified lactation consultant. The Affordable Care Act was the first federal legislation to
broadly protect breastfeeding. The law states that insurance plans must cover lactation visits
and breast pumps at no cost to the patient (unless grandfathered in).

Client Experiences

“I cannot recommend Diane and Drops of Liquid Gold enough! As a first-time
mom, I had so many questions and even concerns about breastfeeding, and she
was an absolute lifesaver.

From our first meeting, she made me feel completely at ease. Her extensive
knowledge of the challenges that come with postpartum life and breastfeeding
was so reassuring, and she knew exactly how to guide me through each hurdle.

I specifically remember having a fear that a lactation consultant might feel pushy
or not be open-minded to my own preferences, but Diane was the complete
opposite of that. She listened to my concerns and my goals as a new mom and
supported me in ways that were completed personal to me.

What really stood out to me was her comfort and compassion—she made a
potentially overwhelming experience feel much more manageable. She even
visited my home, which was so helpful during those early days. On top of that, she
was always available for follow-ups, answering any questions I had and offering
continued support.

She’s a true professional who genuinely cares about her clients, and I would
wholeheartedly recommend her services to any new mom. If you’re looking for
someone who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and incredibly supportive, Diane
is the one to go to!”
- 2025 client review

“Diane is an incredibly knowledgeable and passionate lactation consultant! She
helped me tremendously on my breastfeeding journey. Her laid back personality
will help you feel comfortable and relaxed as she offers great advice and tips to
make your breast feeding journey enjoyable! Best lactation consultant in Bucks
County!” - 2025 client review

“Diane is deeply caring and smart. I felt truly listened to when working with Diane.
She supported not only my nursing journey, but also my motherhood journey.

From the first fragile days postpartum through weaning, Diane sees mothers as
whole people and validates all the many emotions that come with this wild ride.
She is incredibly knowledgeable. She always had many suggestions and resources
for any issue I faced through nursing two children.

In particular, when I struggled with Breastfeeding Aversion and Agitation (BAA)
while nursing my toddler, Diane was a wealth of information. I felt awful and didn't
know how to explain what was going on, but I felt safe reaching out to Diane for
help. She made me feel seen and understood. Diane helped me understand what
was happening and work through ways to ease the BAA.

While many lactation consultants are primarily versed in working with babies,
Diane is a sage guide through extended breastfeeding as well. I am so thankful for
Diane's loving guidance.” -2025 client review

Breastfeeding Aversion and Agitation

On the Blog:

What is it?

The phenomenon of Breastfeeding Aversion and Agitation
is
not very well understood yet by researchers but the term
encompasses the negative physical and emotional
sensations a mother experiences whilst breastfeeding her
child. These negative experiences can happen in different
degrees of severity and at different times within the
breastfeeding journey.

The feelings can become so intense and heavy for the
mother that temporary or permanent breastfeeding
cessation or weaning can happen as a result. Here we will
discuss some strategies thought to help alleviate
Breastfeeding Aversion and Agitation.

What it may look like

Some common signs of Breastfeeding Aversion and Agitation are:

  • Anger while breastfeeding

  • Agitation while breastfeeding

  • Disgust/self-disgust

  • Irritability with latching

  • Rage when baby is at the breast

  • Skin itching/crawling

  • Shame and guilt (typically after
    feeding)

  • Dread/anxiety about having to feed

  • Feeling violated or used (lack of
    consent)

  • Thoughts of self harm or self harming

  • Wanting to ‘run away’ to escape
    feeding

  • Overwhelming urges to unlatch
    infant

  • Feeling trapped - like a prisoner

  • Wanting to push the infant or child
    off so they stop feeding

  • Being ‘touched out’

  • Self-harm while feeding in order to
    continue the feed

  • Hating breastfeeding

Some strategies that may help

Mothers have reported that the following strategies (usually 1 or more of the below) have
helped to decrease the frequency and/or intensity of their negative experiences while
breastfeeding:

  • Distraction while feeding

  • Helpful or supportive company
    around mother while feeding

  • Magnesium supplementation

  • Supportive healthcare provider with
    knowledge of Breastfeeding Aversion
    and Agitation

  • Reducing mental stress

  • Improving quality and quantity of
    sleep

  • Ensuring proper nutrition and
    hydration

  • Infant safe nursing necklace for
    twiddling

  • Clothing to restrict unwanted touch
    while feeding/between feedings

  • Reducing overexertion

  • Ensuring a comfortable, deep latch

  • Reducing nipple pain/trauma

  • Assessing infant for oral restrictions

  • Rule out nipple vasospams

  • Enhance societal support

  • Utilize support services

  • Postpartum or feeding support
